Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome is an air museum in eastern New York that restores and displays Golden Era and WWI aircraft. Where else could the Flying Club possibly go for the fall fly-out? The morning of the fly-out was grey and dreary, but thankfully, by the time we arrived at Kingston-Ulster Airport, we could see patches of blue sky through the clouds. By the time we’d stopped for lunch and driven to the Aerodrome, the sky was wide-open and absolutely beautiful. The airshow opened with barnstorming stunts: first, we watched a Fleet Finch 16-B and a DeHavilland Tiger Moth throw rolls of toilet paper out of the sides of their planes, then compete to see who could make the most cuts in the paper before it fell to the ground. (The Tiger Moth won, with six cuts.) The triumphant Tiger Moth taxiing back ahead of the Fleet Finch. We then got to see a number of Pioneer-era aircraft, including a Blériot XI, the first heavier-than-air craft to cross the English Channel; a 1910 Hanriot; and a Curtiss Pusher Model D. The Blériot barely made it ten feet off the ground, and it was hard to imagine how it could have made the 20-mile trip across the Channel. (After a bit of Googling, I learned that he made the trip at an altitude of 250 ft above the ocean; I expect he was buoyed partly by very favorable winds and mostly by his moustache.) The 1910 Hanriot in flight. Look at it…go? After the display of Pioneer-era aircraft, they brought out a 1917 Sopwith Camel and a 1917 Albatros D.Va for a mock dogfight. Unfortunately the Camel’s engine wouldn’t start, so the Albatros took off alone. It’s no surprise that so many German aces flew Albatros fighters; the Albatros was an absolute dream to watch, and it flew like it was meant to be in the air. The blue-and-white coloring isn’t meant to be camouflage; it represents the livery colors of the Kingdom of Bavaria. This was about the point where my phone died, so I didn’t get to take pictures of the two comedic interludes: first, the “Flying Farmer” act, where the Old Rhinebeck groundskeeper started arguing with the announcer about wanting to be flown back home because he can’t work on the grounds during the show. The announcer told him they’d fly him home after the show, and the frustrated farmer steals a Piper Cub to fly himself home. The plane trundled down the airfield and it looked like he would crash into the trees on takeoff, but he made a high-performance takeoff, pulling up just in time and skimming right over the trees. He flew away, then came back to do some aerial stunts (I had no idea you could do loops in a Cub!) and made an incredibly well-controlled bouncy landing. We were also warned at the beginning of the show that there was an “escaped convict” on the loose at Old Rhinebeck. While a few of the planes were barnstorming overhead, a man in striped clothes drove onto the field in a turn-of-the-century car, with constables in their own car in hot pursuit. The convict’s car broke down, so he jumped out and raced toward the Fleet Finch that had just landed. He grabbed onto the plane and the Finch taxiied out of sight…then suddenly it turned around and took off with the convict flapping along behind the wing! One of the constables fired a rifle at the plane, and the poor convict (who looked suspiciously like a windsock) tumbled down to earth. The constables sped their car over to where he had landed, with the one in the back brandishing a giant butterfly net. As soon as they stopped in front of where the convict had landed, he suddenly recovered from his injuries and sprinted out from behind the car! The show closed with pumpkin bombing, where the D-25 biplane took a payload of pumpkins up over the fake town at the back of the field, and tried to hit Der Sausage Factory und Gasworks. Pumpkins, it turns out, are not the best projectiles…but it was still cool seeing the biplane drop the pumpkins well before it flew over the town, and watching the pumpkins follow parabolic arcs as they fell. After the show, it was time to leave the Golden Era and head back to Boston. We tried a few high-performance maneuvers and practiced some close-formation flying on the way. On your left! I also took far too many pictures of the sunset. I think that’s forgivable, though â€" the sunset is beautiful from the ground, but from the air it’s downright magical. (I kept thinking of the Diana Wynne Jones book Castle in the Air, and the ever-shifting cloud castle.) The one plane I wished we could have seen at the show was the iconic Fokker Dr.1 triplane. Old Rhinebeck alternates shows on the weekends, so on Saturday they hold the History of Flight airshow, with mostly pioneer-era aircraft and barnstormers, while Sunday is for the WWI airshow. Getting spacecraft into orbit is a very expensive activity with typical launch costs generally measures in tens of thousands per kilogram. So what makes it worth the bother? There are three key reasons. First, a satellite is a good vantage point for studying the earth’s surface and atmosphere – just think how many aircrafts would be needed to photograph the whole of the earth, or how many ships to monitor the temperature of the oceans. Second, if we want to study most of the radiation coming for distant parts of the universe we have to get above the atmosphere. The earth’s atmosphere absorbs almost everything that tries to go through it – from X-rays to ultraviolet and from infrared to millimetre waves. Only visible light and radio waves can get through it. In fact, even visible light suffers – convection in the earth’s atmosphere makes stars seem to jump about or twinkle, blurring telescope images, so a telescope in space produces sharper images than possible from earth. Finally, and not least, a communications satellite can beam TV pictures across the globe and link telephone users from different continents. The problem with space Once you’ve got through the huge trouble of expense of launching your satellite, a new set of problems confront you in space. First, a typical spacecraft may need several kilowatts of power – but where do you plug in? The only convenient renewable source of power is the sun, so most spacecrafts are equipped with panels of solar cells. You can see these on the Infrared space observatory (ISO). Unlike earth there is no worry about what to do on cloudy days, but batteries are still needed for periods when the satellite is in the earth’s shadow (usually up to an hour or two per orbit) and the satellite has to be continually steered to keep the panels pointing at the sun. So now we have our spacecraft floating in orbit and pointing to face the sun all the time. Although the solar cells provide partial shade from sunlight the surface still starts to heat up, and with no air to convect the heat away the temperature can rise dramatically. To add to the difficulties, the other side of the spacecraft faces cold space (at about 3k or -270à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½C) and so begins to cool down, unchecked; this would distort the structure, wreck the electronics and decompose the materials that make up the spacecraft. So most surfaces of the spacecraft are covered in â€Å"space blanket† – multilayer insulation made of metallised plastic which reflects the radiation away and insulates the spacecraft. This is crinkly shiny material. 1.2 Studying with satellites The UoSAT satellites are very small, relatively low-cost, spacecraft whose purpose is to test and evaluate new systems and space technology and to enable students and amateur scientists to study the near-earth environment. They are designed and built by the university of Surrey spacecraft engineering research unit. UoSAT, also known as Oscar 11 has sensors to record the local magnetic field, providing information about solar and geomagnetic disturbances and there affects on radio communications at various frequencies. Instruments on board also measure some 60 items relating to the satellites operation. These include; the temperature of its faces, its batteries and other electronic devices; the current provided by its solar arrays; and the battery voltages. It can also receive store and transmit messages to simple radio receivers anywhere in the world. UoSAT’s orbit takes it over both poles at a height of about 650km above the earth’s surface, and the spinning of the earth allows it to receive data about six times a day. Each UoSAT spacecraft is designed to last about 7 years. Even small spacecrafts such as these need electricity to run all onboard systems, form the computer that controls it all, to the radio transmitters and receivers that send and receive all data to and from ground stations on the earths surface. UoSAT’s are small, each with a mass of typically 50kg and about 0.5m across. For comparison, JET-X is about 540kg in mass and about 4.5m long. Communications satellites are larger still, with masses of typically 2 to 5 tonnes. At the top en of the scale is the proposed International Space Station (ISS) – a co-operative venture between 13 nations, including the UK. Construction and testing started in1995 and completion is due in 2002. The completed station will have a mass of about 470 tonnes, measure 110m from tip to tip of its solar arrays, and have pressured living and working space for its crew of six almost equal to the passenger space on two 747 jet airliners. It will have a demand of about 110kw. 1.3 Spacecraft power systems Schematic diagram of a spacecraft power system The below figure shows three main elements in a spacecraft power system. The primary source involves the use of fuel to produce electrical power. Primary sources include fuel cells in which a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen produces electricity (with drinking water as a useful by-product), and radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTG’s) in which a radioactive decay process produces heating in a thermoelectric module that generates electricity. In spacecraft, the most common primary source s the photovoltaic cell, powered by solar radiation; here the initial fuel is protons in the sun, which undergo nuclear fusion. The secondary source is the energy storage system – usually a set of batteries. Sometimes regenerative fuel cells are used in which power from solar arrays electrolyses water to produce hydrogen and oxygen gases during the â€Å"charge† cycle, followed by hydrogen and oxygen recombining to make water during the â€Å"discharge† cycle. n electronic power control and distribution unit controls and adjusts the voltage and current inputs and outputs, often using primary and secondary sources together to boost the overall output power. Orbiting satellites undergo between 90 and 5500 eclipses, moving into the shadow of the earth, each year. The former is typical of a geostationary telecommunications satellite, the latter of a satellite is in a low orbit like UoSAT 2. The ISS will have sixteen thirty minute periods of shadow each day. The secondary power supply is therefore vital, because during eclipse electrical power has to be supplied by batteries. There are also occasions when batteries are needed to provide power in addition to that of the solar panels. The spacecraft’s solar panels are used to recharge its batteries when it emerges into sunlight. To do this they must provide a high enough voltage – higher than the batteries own voltage. He uses phrases like ecstasy of fumbling, and this emotive expression stirs feelings inside the reader, we can really picture these weary soldiers suddenly having to grope for their gas marks. Within her poem, Pope uses many questions, which involve the reader more, and, together with the use of everyday language give the poem a less formal feel. She persuades the men to join the army by making them feel deceitful and cowardly if they were to lie low. She also has a friendly manner in her propaganda poem as she refers to the men as lads. The first three lines in each four-line stanza are all about the heroism and eagerness that each man should feel, while the last line is a cutting remark about the cowardice of men who would not sign up. Pope has written this poem in four quatrains with a regular rhythm and rhyme scheme, which makes the poem more memorable. This is also a technique employed in childrens poetry and as such trivialises her subject matter. The biggest writing technique that Jessie Pope uses is in her metaphorical language, comparing war to a game, the biggest thats played. This disillusioned idea exhibits the attitude towards war that woman and children had, back at home in England. Pope continually uses comparisons throughout the four stanzas of the poem, and some onomatopoeia in crashing and grip. She utilizes only these very simple poetic techniques because her poetry was written when poems were not so adventurous, they simply got their message across. However, Owens poem is not like this at all, he uses a variety of poetic techniques to convey his shocking imagery. The use of similes, like a devil sick of sin, and metaphors, obscene as cancer, are all very descriptive and deplorable remarks, which shock the reader into realising the unpleasantness that soldiers were facing. Owen also uses onomatopoeia, but to a much greater effect than Jessie Pope for example gargling, and choking. Owen writes in a more formal tone than Jessie Pope, and in comparison to Whos for the game, Wilfred Owen uses imagery to a great extent. There are four main image groups that run all the way through the poem. The first is that of sleep or dreams Owen himself suffered from unspeakable nightmares as a symptom of shell shock, and this was reflected in his poetry. Illustration of this imagery are found in words like haunting, fatigue and smothering dreams. The next image group is that of drowning and helplessness; floundering, guttering, choking. On top of this, Owen uses imagery of un-coordination, which is really what gives the poem its almost twisted feel bent double, knock-kneed, and writhing. The final image group that Owen uses is senses, allowing the reader to feel, see, and hear what is going on. Owen writes all went lame; all went blind; deaf even to the hoots. Wilfred Owen also shows us a small group of images, which are just ghastly pictures of war and occur largely in the last stanza. In any case, all of the specific image groups work together and throughout the poem to show us a vivid picture of war. These images are utilized by Owen to show the ultimate irony and the moral of the poem; it is not in fact a sweet and meet fate to die for ones country even though current writers of his day, like Jessie Pope were publicising it as something heroic. This irony is illustrated in a clever juxtaposition at the end of the poem. The men who enlist are innocent, they are children who have learned that war is full of high zest and this makes them ardent for some desperate glory. Innocent people are willing to believe the lie but they will, of course, learn differently once they experience the war first hand, and this is why Owen was so bitter towards Jessie Pope and other such war poets, because they had helped to convince men to effectively sign their own death warrants. Wilfred Owen makes an immediate separation between the dying soldier and himself. This is shown metaphorically. Owen refers to the sea metaphorically showing the strength of the ocean or in this case, the gas. He infers that you are powerless against the gas. This is shown by as under a green sea I see him drowning. This stanza is showing the ease of death on the front. One shell of gas can kill a person in an instant and that soldier is powerless against it. The third stanza is very powerful and in it Wilfred Owen says he will never forget that moment and that the man can never be replaced. However the army generals use the men as pieces in a game, to them the soldiers are just cannon fodder, but in reality they are dealing with somebodys life. This is why Wilfred Owen dislikes Jessie Pope. In the final paragraph, Wilfred Owen takes an immediate shot at Jessie Pope by saying you too could pace and if you could hear. It is trying to say that they should not be able to write about the war when they do not have a clue about the consequences of her poetry. Sarcastically Owen calls the pro-war poet my friend; this implies a fellow poet, Jessie Pope, rather than an actual friend. Being referred to as friend will not offend the pro-war poet yet it shows their responsibility to tell the truth and their adverse effect on the youth. Westley Dodds Childhood Years Westley Allan Dodd was born in Washington State on July 3, 1961. Dodd grew up in what has been described as a loveless home and was often neglected by his parents in favor of his two younger brothers. At age 13, Dodds began exposing himself to children passing by his house. Realizing the dangers of getting caught, he started bicycling around the streets looking for opportunities to expose himself. His parents, distracted by their own problems of getting divorced, were aware of Dodds strange sexual behavior but avoided confronting the boy about it or getting him help. Even less attention was given to Westley after his parents divorced. His desires expanded from exhibitionism to physical contact. He first molested those closest to him. His younger cousins, ages six and eight and the child of a woman his father was dating, became regular victims of his growing perversions. Entrusted Caretaker of Children Dodd grew up to be a good-looking, fairly intelligent and personable teenager. On Labor Day weekend at David Douglas Park, he hid beside a trail. They came upon Dodd, blocking their way on the dirt trail. Dodd did not waste time and ordered the boys to follow him. The boys did as instructed, possibly out of fear when realizing the usually busy park was deserted so late in the day. Once off the trail, it took Dodd only 20 minutes to molest the boys, stab them and clean up the evidence. When Lee began to resist, Dodd told him not to worry, that Lees father had sent Dodd to pick him up. Inside Dodds apartment, Lee was subjected to unimaginable acts of abuse and torture, all carefully documented by Dodds with pictures and entries in his diary. The morning after his capture, Dodds hung Lee Iseli to death in his closet before heading off to work. He took photographs of the little boy dying and hanging dead, hid the body behind some blankets and left. After work, he made an entry in his diary that he would, have to find a place to dump the garbage, meaning the tiny tortured body of Lee Iseli. He decided to leave the boy by the Van Couver Lake and burn any evidence, except for the childs Ghostbusters underpants. Robert Iseli, Lees father, still had hope. Although Lee had been missing for several days, Mr. Iseli made a public statement expressing the hope that Lee had been taken by a lonely, but kindly person, but on the morning of November 1, 1989, all hope ended after the body of Lee Iseli was found. Capture and Confession Dodd, avoiding the local parks, decided that movie theaters would be a good place to hunt his next victim. He went to the New Liberty Theater and waited for a young child to go unattended to the restroom. He managed to get the screaming six-year-old boy outside but was captured by William Ray Graves, the boyfriend of the childs mother. Dodd was interrogated by police from Washington and Oregon, as a suspect in the murders of the Neer brothers and Lee Iseli. At first, he denied having any knowledge about the children and maintained that he only meant to molest the child from the theater. Then his whole attitude changed and he confessed to the murders, delighting in revealing the shocking details. He directed police to his diary, Lee Iselis Ghostbusters briefs, the incriminating photos, and the unused torture rack. Trial and Prosecution Dodd was charged with three counts of first-degree murder plus the attempted kidnapping from the New Liberty Theater. Against his lawyer’s advice, he pleaded not guilty but later changed that to guilty. It was up to a jury to decide the penalty. The district attorney made it clear the verdict he expected. He told the jury, He planned child murders. He committed child murders. He relived and fantasized child murders. With life in prison without the possibility of parole, two of those things are still available to him. The jury was then shown the diary, pictures, and other evidence. Dodds defense called no witnesses and presented no evidence. Dodds attorney, Lee Dane, did offer that no sane person would be capable of these heinous crimes. Dodd received the death sentence on July 15, 1990. No Appeals Dodd refused to appeal his death penalty and chose to hang as the method of execution, claiming he wanted to experience what Lee Iseli had experienced. He told the court, I must be executed before I have an opportunity to escape or kill someone within the prison. If I do escape, I promise you I will kill and rape and enjoy every minute of it. When You Meet a Stranger His date of execution was set for January 5, 1993. He received a lot of attention because no legal hanging had been done in the U.S. since 1965. Dodd enjoyed telling his story to the media and he wrote a pamphlet on how to avoid child molesters entitled When You Meet a Stranger. During the months before his execution, Dodds seemingly turned to the Bible for comfort. During one of his interviews, he said, I believe what the Bible teaches: Ill go to Heaven. I have doubts, but Id really like to believe that I would be able to go up to the three little boys and give them a hug and tell them how sorry I was and be able to love them with a real true love and have no desire to hurt them in any way. Last Words Westley Allan Dodd was executed at 12:05 a.m. on June 5, 1993. His final statement was, I was once asked by somebody, I dont remember who, if there was any way sex offenders could be stopped. I said, No. I was wrong. I was wrong when I said there was no hope, no peace. There is hope. There is peace. I found both in the Lord, Jesus Christ. Look to the Lord, and you will find peace. There were no apologies for his crimes, no obvious look of remorse. Outside the prison, those who were in support of the execution could be heard chanting rhymes like What the heck stretch his neck while the non-supporters wept at the news that his execution had gone on as planned.
